PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Philadelphia judge ruled that the controversial Christopher Columbus statue can remain at Marconi Plaza in South Philadelphia. Common Pleas Court judge Paula Patrick passed the verdict on Tuesday.

She said the city’s decision to remove the statue last year was not supported by law and was based on insufficient evidence.

The City of Philadelphia is disappointed with the decision and will consider all possible options, including an appeal.

Last summer, the statue became a hotspot after the assassination of George Floyd as protests against systemic racism and injustice swept the country.

Demonstrators and supporters of Columbus sometimes clashed violently in Marconi Plaza.
Some of those who tried to protect the statue were there seen them holding bats and guns as they kept watch.
