Cleveland Indians recall Triston McKenzie for one-and-done begin in opposition to the Tigers

DETROIT – Sometimes you’re gone, but you’re not really gone. Just ask Triston McKenzie.

The Indians elected McKenzie to the AAA Columbus class on Saturday after allowing six runs with two hits in 3 1/3 innings in a 10-0 loss to the Twins on Friday night. After Tuesday’s 4-1 win against the Tigers, manager Terry Francona announced that McKenzie will start his regular rotation on Wednesday evening before being given another option for Columbus.

Francona would use a bullpen game on Wednesday to fill McKenzie’s place in the rotation. However, Zach Plesac was diagnosed with a broken right thumb so the Indians were able to bring McKenzie back without him spending the required 10 days in the minors. The move will be official on Wednesday, when Plesac is added to the list of injured.

McKenzie will meet Jose Urena from Detroit at Comerica Park on Wednesday. McKenze (1-3, 6.89) leads the major leagues with 30 walks allowed, which was one of the reasons he was selected for Columbus. He has also beaten 44 batters in eight appearances, including seven starts.

After McKenzie’s start, the Indians have yet to figure out how to fill two holes in the rotation. It’s Plesac’s turn on Friday when the Indians open a three-game series against Toronto at Progressive Field.
