CLEVELAND, Ohio – If Aaron Civale and Shane Bieber return to the Indians, it seems certain that Cal Quantrill will continue to perform right next to them. That goes for the rest of this season and beyond, should he continue to perform as he has been since leaving the bullpen to try to support a decimated rotation.
Quantrill, aided by a relentless offensive, brought the Indians to a 6-1 win over the Tigers at Progressive Field on Friday night. Quantrill hit a career high with 10 thugs in seven goalless innings. He is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his last six starts.
As for Miguel Cabrera’s march-to-history meter, Quantrill (3-2, 3.14) kept Cabrera in the ballpark and limited him to a single in the seventh. Cabrera stays just under 500 two homers, but the single got him to 54 hits out of 3,000.
James Karinchak pulled the Tigers back in sequence in eighth place, but Blake Parker struggled in ninth place. He went with charged bases and one after Jeimer Candelarios RBI single. Emmanuel Clase was relieved and beat Eric Haase and Reyes for his 15th save in 19 chances.
The Indians, who were kept goalless by the Blue Jays on Thursday, took a 4-0 lead in fourth off-right-hander Matt Manning. They had six hits in the inning, with Bobby Bradley’s double-run double being the biggest. Amed Rosario and Jose Ramirez hit Bradley’s brace into the right Feldeck for a 4-0 lead.
When Harold Ramirez followed Bradley’s double to center with a single, Bradley was cleared from the plate with a good throw from Derek Hill. It is unknown if Bradley was injured in that game, but Harold Ramirez replaced him at first base in the fifth inning. The Indians announced that Bradley had been removed due to a left knee injury.
It was Ramirez’s professional debut at first base. Catcher Roberto Perez, who played first base against Houston on July 20, was added to the injured list ahead of the game. Yu Chang, her other replacement first baseman, was assigned to Class AAA Columbus on Monday.
Austin Hedges started the third with a single. Ernie Clement doubled it to third place. Myles Straw, who had three goals, made the 1-0 with a single left as Clement finished third. The choice of Rosario Fielder scored Clement and Jose Ramirez doubled Rosario to third place.
The Indians made it 6-0 in their fourth game with Straws Single and Rosario’s Sacrificial Flies. First base umpire Greg Gibson originally ruled that right fielder Victor Reyes caught Straws Liner with a dive. The Indians challenged the call and after a 2:32 check it was found that Reyes had caught the ball.
Straw was credited for a single and an RBI, while Clement was placed on third base by the umpires. Rosario followed in the middle with his prey fly. As in the third, Hedges and Clement set the table for the rally with successive one-out singles.
The Indians succeeded in 22 of their 31 repetition challenges. That’s a 71% success rate.
It was a good night for Clement, who started on third base. He finished the game with two hits and made a great defensive game. In the second inning, he impaled Hill’s bouncer when his swing landed him in foul territory. Then he turned and hit a strike first for the out. Bradley helped with a great stretch and pick on the piece.
The Indians needed this victory. They’d lost three in a row and had a 2-5 trip against the White Sox and Blue Jays.
Tiger rebuilding has improved. They entered the game on Friday after winning two out of three from Boston, while holding a 13-7 record since the All-Star hiatus.
But the Indians roughly treated Manning, the Tigers’ number 1 in 2016, for the second time this season. They scored six runs in 10 hits against him over four innings. Manning (2-5, 6.33) has allowed 15 runs with 19 hits in 7 2/3 innings against the Indians this season.
The Indians stand 9-5 against the Tigers this season. Since the beginning of the 2016 season, they have been 74-25 against Detroit.
The Indians finished with 15 hits. Stroh led the way with three. Bradley, Harold Ramirez, Hedges, and Clement each had two.
Next up: LHP Tyler Alexander (1-1, 4.77) vs. RHP Eli Morgan (1-3, 6.75) Saturday at 7:10 p.m. Bally Sports Great Lakes, WTAM and WMMS will carry the game.
