As the United States completes its military withdrawal from Afghanistan, thousands of Afghans who have escaped their Taliban-ruled land now face new lives in a new country. That includes a family to Cincinnati. Heartfelt Tidbits is a Cincinnati-based organization committed to helping and relocating immigrants and refugees in the greater Cincinnati area. The organization also helps support families in the transition to housing, education and employment. Heartfelt Tidbits says she is currently working on relocating a family from Afghanistan. The nonprofit says the mother is an American citizen who left the United States as a teenager and married and raised a family in Afghanistan. The couple have three young children, including a 6 month old baby. Founder and CEO Sheryl Rajbhandari says the mother contacted Heartfelt Tidbits to escape because she had a connection with a volunteer at the organization. Rajbhandari says the family was able to get a visa from the US embassy in Kabul, but still waited a week in front of the Kabul airport to leave. Rajbhandari says the family flew out on a U.S. military cargo plane on Tuesday, arrived in Germany on Wednesday and finally flew to Dulles International Airport. Rajbhandari said the family arrived in the United States with nothing but clothes on their backs. Moving to a new country is difficult, especially as the family is coping with the trauma of fleeing their country. What are the perks of being here: the Safety, the ability to move your children freely to a park and not have to worry about the safety of the children or yourself if you are shot at, “said Rajbhandari of the emotional toll of moving to a new country. Rajbhandari told the other WLWT Heartfelt Tidbits is working to secure and furnish a home in Clifton and help the family adapt to life in America with language courses and job aids. Heartfelt Tidbits says it has processed 16 applications to help families and individuals relocate in Aid to Cincinnati, however, says only that one family will get the go-ahead from the State Department to enter the United States n has. Rajbhandari is concerned that if the Taliban continue to take over the country, they may not make it out of Afghanistan. “But we can leave them behind anyway. Rajbhandari said the family will still be in the Washington DC area until they are released for resettlement in Cincinnati.
Despite the relief of being able to flee, the transition to a new country is difficult, said Rajbhandari, especially as the family is coping with the trauma of fleeing their country.
“By allowing them to share their frustration and anger and being a good listener to the stories, but I think I also think I highlight the benefits of being here: the safety, the opportunity to go, you know to take your children with you? free to go to a park and not worry about the safety of the children or yourself if you are shot at, “said Rajbhandari of the emotional stress of moving to a new country.
