It’s Tuesday, March 16, 2021 and on that day in 1926, the Keith Albee Palace Theater Opening at 5 Wick Ave. in downtown Youngstown.
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the opening of the Hippodrome Theater and noted, “Downtown was really a mecca for theater in its heyday.” The palace was really a big part of that story. It was originally opened for the Vaudeville circuit, but as that entertainment wore off, it received a sound upgrade for big band music and the stars of the emerging music scene. like Frank Sinatra in 1942.
As the years wound down, the palace became just another movie house. And the days of single-show theaters were numbers that eventually succumbed to multiscreen theaters. As Vince Guerrieri reported in “The Lost Movie Palaces of Youngstown” for Belt MagazineThe palace was closed on November 29, 1964 after a performance of “First Men in the Moon”.
“The theater lost its film distribution and the building itself was sold to a contractor who had big plans for an eight-story building with apartments, shops and a cinema – a multiplex, of course – on the ground floor,” he said, “The following year they were Equipment auctioned. A crowd of around 200 people visited the palace one last time before it was bulldozed. “
You literally paved paradise and built a parking lot. All this talk about theater made me nostalgic about the old days (2019) when we’d queued en masse to see big blockbusters in a big theater with hundreds of strangers. The smell of the popcorn. The roar of the crowd. The instant reviews on the way out of the theater.
My consolation: I’ll get my second shot next week!
