An inmate of a privately operated prison in Youngstown is charged again after allegedly spraying two prison workers with liquids, including feces and urine.
James W. Smith, 32, appeared on video before a federal judge Thursday to answer a charge of assaulting United States officials and employees.
According to an affidavit, Smith was detained at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on April 20 for allegedly spraying a mixture of feces and urine on a correctional officer walking past his cell door.
On May 18, investigators said Smith threw an unknown liquid substance on the face, chest and arm of a nurse who made daily visits.
Both prison employees were sent to the prison medical department for examination.
Smith, who was convicted of federal weapon violations in 2015, is now in Mahoning County Jail pending further legal action in the U.S. District Court.
